Later, Henry apologized to Gregory, and he let hi-m back into the church. The pope excommunicated Henry because he found out that he was working against the church. In 1703, Pope Gregory VII came to power and had problems with the bishop, Emperor Henry IV. ![]() Kings thought they could choose bishops, but popes said that they were the only ones who had the power of choosing religious parts. The feudalistic set up of European Middle Ages was also strengthened by the emergence of Christian religious revolutions. ![]() In the mid 1000's, a group of popes wanted to increase their authority over the Eastern Bishops.The Great Schism is reflected as the political and cultural divisions between the Orthodox and Catholic parts of Europe in today's world. In order to attain security after the fall of the Roman Empire, against Germanic barbarians, Islamic invaders, and pagan enemies, European kingdoms gradually accepted the customs of feudalism. During the Middle Ages, the military that different Kingdoms had were either weak or they were strong, there wasn’t too much in-between. The basic unit of these feudal arrangements was the fief, a section of land. If the pope thought that someone was working against the church, they could excommunicate - cast out from the church. Feudalism is the term applied to relationships between members of the aristocracy. People saw the pope as God's representation. They both controlled the European society. The popes had the spiritual power and the kinds had the political power.
